Kick back with a good glass of wine at Newlyn Filmhouse...
We have been eagerly awaiting the opening of Newlyn Filmhouse this month - a brilliant and brave project to transform an old fish warehouse into an independent cinema for West Cornwall. As you can imagine, we jumped at the opportunity to get involved, but more of that shortly...
The development has been planned by joint owners Suzie Sinclair and Alistair Till for many years. It received planning permission in 2013 and has been greeted with huge enthusiasm by the local community. Not only does the project bring cinema back to Newlyn after more than 50 years, it will also act as a new and exciting hub for the arts, an events venue and a meeting place for the local community. With Newlyn Art Gallery just around the corner, and a healthy selection of great places to eat within walking distance, this historic fishing port should now be on everyone’s radar – locals and visitors alike.
The cinema promises a programme of mainstream and off-beat current films, plus archive showings and ‘event cinema’ (live streaming of, for example, opera, ballet or theatre). Film launches, festivals and theme nights are also planned – something we think will make winter in West Cornwall a whole lot more sociable!
The sensitively renovated building also features a great cafe bar serving delicious homemade cakes, soft drinks, a daily-changing menu featuring local produce and (this is where we come in) a carefully-chosen selection of wines and spirits.
Working with Suzie and Alistair, we have created a small but perfectly formed list of wines by the glass – keenly priced and dangerously easy-drinking. We are really excited to be working with the team, and are also looking forward to collaborating on events and theme nights in the near future; watch this space!
A beautifully designed setting, great food and wine, and an inspiring line-up of films; we can’t think of a better way to spend an evening and are looking forward to becoming regulars. Membership seems a good option at £30 a year (includes 2 free tickets and £1 off admission prices). For more info visit www.newlynfilmhouse.com
